If I am receiving a male and female PD and the male needs neutered, plus he is already protecting his female, can I get him neutered first, then after some of the ttestosterone is down, bond with him?
Seems like I will definetly get bit if I try to bond before having him neutered????

Hi Binger. Definitely get him neutered ASAP! I adopted an adult male, neutered him, and introduced him, slowly, to another adult male (already neutered) in a neutral space. They became the best of buddies and I was able to bond with him. Be patient!Good luck!

Rachel,
I copied this info off the "PD Care Sheet" link on this site.
Vet Care: Spaying/Neutering Choosing a proper Vet is very important. A Vet should be selectedby their experience with prairie dogs or at least be willing to consult with a vet more experienced with this species. A fecal flotation and smear are generally recommended to check for intestinal parasites during your initial visit to your Vet or anytime your pet comes in contact with the earth.Altering your pet is recommended. In order to ease the symptoms of seasonal aggressive behavior that accompanies the onset of mating season, it is best to neuter or spay your prairie dog during the Fall of their first year or the following Spring. If you wait longer, the prairie dog may develop undesirable and ingrained territorial and hormone driven HABITS that could be curbed or eliminated by neutering prior to sexual maturity. When you schedule the appointment for the surgery, it is recommended that ask for a baseline radiograph of the sinus area while your PD is under anesthesia. hope it helps
