Di, You have a great mission, and i applaud your efforts to be the caretaker of animals. The two poems i read were touching and powerful. So happy that we reconnected.

Hi Steve!

While we unequivocally agree that prairie dogs are indeed important to a healthy western ecosystem, the message of this individual sounds more like an endorsement for the cattle industry!  The cattle industry would have you believe that ranchers are in compettion with wildlife, and support and participate in the massacre of wildlife, all in the name of "wildlife management".  It is the profitable cattle industry that is responsible for the destruction of our ecosystems due to human consumption and demand.

If you would like to learn more about preservation and restoration of our grasslands, please visit http://www.wildearthguardians.org/ and http://gprc.org/ where you will find accurate information.

Hello, I became aware of the importance of prarie dogs on a walk and talk with a ranger at Caprock Canyon SP.  I just heard an interesting TED talk on the importance of hearding behavior on the restoration of grasslands, which may be of interest.  Please reference Allan Savory's TED talk, How to green the desert and reverse climate change, Mar 2013.  Steve

Hi ! I wish I would have found this site sooner.. my prairie dog, Boxxy, recently passed away just a couple of days ago. I've had him from Oct 2009 til now, Aug 2010. I thought pd's live a lot longer than that, which is why i'm so shocked about his death. I had checked on him a few times through out the day and he seemed completely normal acting, then later on i found him dead belly up with dry blood in his nose and dried up foam in his cage. It was horrifying. I am so confused by his death, I literally have no idea how this could have happened. He was the best pet i could have asked for , and i recommend prairie dogs as pets for everyone. He was so cuddly and full of personality. If anyone has heard of this happening to prairie dogs before, please let me know. thanks

Hi there!

Maybe you can help me.. I've been reading up on PD for a little while now, and I have my heart set on getting one. I love the idea of having an animal as a best friend to do things with.. I love animals.

My only problem is, I live in Canada. I cant find ANYTHING about PD in canada on the web.. and I have only come across 2 people who own one in a 500 km radius of my town. Can you explain to me why this is? I am aware they were band in Canada and the US.. but I have read that the ban was lifted in 2008.. so why are there so few?

I would love to own one.

Love this site. I wanted to take a moment to say thank you. We were traveling this past june and took our baby PD with us. They are young and we felt that the time apart would be bad for them. Also we were afraid that our animal babysitter might leave the cage door open or something. Anyhow while on vac our little 'Run-a-way' started limping. Not certain as to why, but she just wasn't eating or drinking. I was out of my home state, didn't know were to find a vet, and I wasn't even certain if the PD were alowed in this state. Despirate to help me little girl I went to the web. Found this website, and followed the advice given. It saved Run-a-way. She is now running, jumping, and being her usuall pain in the @#$ self. Her and Peek-a-boo are happy and health...thanks to this site. Thanks again

I live in IL, about 40 min south of Chicago, I was wondering how to locate PD  that need to be rescued in my area?  I have one little boy and would love to have another.  BTW, my daughter and I love this site, it answered A LOT of my questions :)

Hi Jean!  It was nice talking with you yesterday.  I found some information for you!

Bumblefoot (ulcerative pododermatitis) is a bacterial infection and inflammatory reaction on the feet of birds and rodents. This infection is much more likely to occur in captive animals than in those in the wild.

This can be treated with an antibiotic and changing the newspaper on the floor of the enclosure every day!

Hope this helps!

My husband and I recently lost two of our little girls, Yippee and Sunshine.  Yippee was a part of our lives for 11 years, and Sunshine for 7.  We have room in our hearts(and home) for 2 more.  If you know of any pds in need of a good home, we can provide one.  We live in the far south suburbs of Chicago.  You can e-mail me at   luvmypds@earthlink.net.  Thanks!!

I love prairie dogs and gave my two babies away in 2006 after having my first child and realized I was moving to a state that prohibited my "children." I gave them to a loving family who had recently lost theirs to heaven.  Now, 4 yrs. later, I'm wondering if the ban is over.  Can I have pd's in NC? I miss them so and my students want them in the classroom again.  I have a little shelf dedicated to my books and collectables of pd's. :-) Help? Thanks!

I'm not sure that's possible. You will have to contact the CDC and inquire about quarantine protocol, if there is any in place. If you are able to contact your congressional representative here in the U.S. to inquire for you, you may have more luck getting an answer. Please keep us posted.
I talked to a rep and was told that as long as i get a permit that I can import him. I am trying to find out what states are legal to have them. That is my next missions and try to get that permit. He is the only one in the house that thinks i am number one, everyone else love momma more. thanks Curtis

Hello, what a wonderful organization. I was perusing the web because I'm doing a graduate project documentary on Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs. I'd love to interview you or anyone else you might think could help out. I never knew there was so much info on caring for Prairie Dogs!
