Basic Care Sheet for Baby Prairie Dogs

During the first six months, a baby prairie dog needs good nutrition,

a warm and safe enclosure, and lots of love.

A bonding bag made of thick fleece about 20” x 18”

works well to gentle them while providing a safe,

warm place to hide from the scary world.

Diet:

Up to 6 months old feed 10 ccs of the following

mixture three times a day [warmed]

Ingredients:  goat milk, baby food sweet potatoes or peas,

and Oxbow’s apple/banana flavored Critical Care

(pureed grass may be added)

1 tablespoon of CC to one jar of baby food.

- Unlimited grass, dandelions and clover,

(in season), timothy hay

(or hay sold for horses locally if available)

*NO ALFALFA

- Fresh bottled water (16 oz. rabbit water bottle works well)

clean daily

- Supplemental food:  timothy pellets, Healthy Handfuls

(Oxbow) Barley treats (Oxbow),

Nature’s Recipe Vegetarian dog food nuggets,

Quaker Old Fashioned oats *mix 1 tbsp with pellets

(not Quick oats)

Treats:  (very small amount)

Raw almond, plain sunflower seeds (not roasted or salted),

whole oats, green beans, snow peas, carrot, FRESH corn on the cob

(never dried corn), sweet potato, plain cheerios.

For older or compromised adults, 35 ccs daily of above mixture

(warmed) will sustain them.  [no goat milk for adults]

Always provide a bowl of pellets and oats.

It is imperative that baby prairie dogs are kept warm

using a snuggle safe (heat disc).

I recommend baby receiving blankets and a

fleece covered snuggle safe underneath them for warmth.

PLEASE keep little paws far away from any electrical outlets!!

Keep cage clean (vinegar) and use newspaper

instead of wood shavings on floor.

A ferret/rabbit litter box may be used with a

small amount of aspen shavings.   ~ REMOVE HAY DAILY ~
